Chinese startup Moonshot has unveiled Kimi K3, a model with 2.8 trillion parameters, claiming it is the world’s largest open-source AI system and rivaling Anthropic’s Fable. The launch comes a month after the US government abruptly blocked Anthropic’s models over safety concerns, highlighting how China’s open AI ecosystem is closing the gap with American leaders.
Kimi K3 is designed for advanced reasoning, long-term coding, and knowledge work, featuring a context window of 1 million tokens. The model allows processing and retaining far more information in a single prompt than previous generations. Moonshot says it is the first open-architecture model to approach the 3 trillion parameter threshold.
According to Moonshot, Kimi K3 performed competitively compared to Fable 5 and significantly outperformed Opus 4.8, GPT 5.6 Sol, and GPT 5.5 from OpenAI in GPU kernel optimization. Independent tests from Arena.ai ranked Kimi K3 first in web interface creation capabilities, while Vals AI placed it second behind Fable 5 but ahead of GPT 5.6 Sol.
How Kimi K3 stacks up against the competition
Artificial Analysis found that Kimi K3 delivered performance comparable to OpenAI’s GPT 5.5 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, particularly in tests measuring complex, multi-step reasoning. The results suggest that Chinese developers are no longer months behind their American counterparts, as previously assumed in the West.

Market reaction and the broader race
The news of Moonshot’s breakthrough triggered a sharp decline in shares of Chinese AI rivals Zhipu and MiniMax in Hong Kong, falling 21.9% and 13.8% respectively by midday. The drop reflects investor concern that Moonshot has pulled ahead in the race to develop cutting-edge AI models at lower costs.
Firms like Moonshot, Z.ai and MiniMax are releasing increasingly advanced models at significantly lower costs, challenging the long-held belief that Chinese developers lag behind American counterparts by months. The US block on Anthropic’s models has only accelerated this shift, as it opened space for Chinese open-source models to gain global attention.
