Buy now or wait? Coal prices send an important signal

July is a good time to start preparing for the heating season, especially for those using coal heating. Those who decide to buy fuel in advance can avoid higher expenses, as coal prices may increase by several hundred zlotys per tonne with rising demand.

People who already decide to buy coal for winter can save a significant amount of money and avoid long waiting times for delivery. In the middle of summer, prices are at their lowest, and coal yards often offer promotions. The situation will soon change as more people start ordering fuel, driving prices up.

Currently, what are the prices per tonne of coal? According to the dom.wp.pl service, the prices at the Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG) store are as follows: eco-pea coal – 1,250 PLN/t, nut coal – 1,150 PLN/t, lump coal – 1,100 PLN/t, fines – 950 PLN/t. Of course, transport costs must be added to these amounts. An alternative is to buy from local coal yards, which often offer delivery even the next day, though prices are slightly higher than at the producer.

Current coal prices per tonne

The coal market is heavily influenced by seasonality. – The most favorable coal prices can usually be obtained in spring and summer, – wrote the WNP.pl portal. Local yards may charge an extra 50–100 PLN per tonne compared to PGG, but they guarantee quicker availability.

– The best time to buy is between April and June, when sellers most often offer better prices and more advantageous purchase conditions, – the KB.pl service stated. So waiting until autumn is not advisable, as prices at the turn of September and October can rise by several hundred zlotys per tonne.

Why summer is the cheapest season for coal

Buying fuel out of season not only provides real savings but also avoids the autumn rush and last-minute supply problems. Many families learned this during the energy crisis when shortages and queues were common. By ordering in July, you secure your stock well before the heating season begins.

It is worth remembering that coal yards also run promotions in summer – discounts of up to 10% per tonne are not uncommon. Combined with free or reduced transport, the total cost can be noticeably lower than in autumn. Some sellers even allow partial payment or installment plans for early buyers.

What to consider before buying coal

Before making a purchase, compare offers from PGG and local suppliers. Check the calorific value and ash content – cheaper coal may have lower quality, resulting in higher usage. Also, calculate transport costs: long-distance delivery can add 100–200 PLN per tonne.

– The coal market is heavily dependent on seasonality, and the most favorable coal prices can usually be obtained in spring and summer, – repeated the WNP.pl portal. So acting now means financial savings and peace of mind when the cold weather arrives.
