Buy now or wait? Coal prices send an important signal

Buying coal in advance can be a smart move for households that rely on this heating fuel. Prices are currently lower than during peak season, but increased demand in autumn could drive the cost up by several hundred zlotys per tonne.

July is a good time to start preparing for the heating season, especially for those using coal-fired boilers. Those who decide to purchase fuel early can avoid higher expenses later. As demand rises, coal prices may climb by as much as several hundred zlotys per tonne.

People who choose to buy coal now can save a significant amount of money and avoid long delivery waiting times. This is because prices are at their lowest in midsummer, and coal depots often offer promotions. The situation will soon change as more people start placing orders, driving prices upward.

How much does a tonne of coal cost today? According to the website dom.wp.pl, the prices at Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG) stores are as follows: (the article lists specific figures, but these are not provided in the original text – we can note that additional transport costs apply). An alternative is to buy from local coal depots, which often offer delivery even the next day, though their prices are slightly higher than those of producers.

As we wrote on WNP, the coal market is strongly seasonal, and the best prices are usually available in spring and summer. Experts advise aiming for the period from April to June – that is when sellers most often offer favourable prices and better purchase conditions, according to the KB.pl service.

Don’t wait until autumn – the price surge is coming

It is not worth waiting until autumn, because at the turn of September and October, prices may rise by as much as several hundred zlotys per tonne. By buying out of season, you can not only save money but also avoid the autumn rush and last-minute stockpiling problems.

The advice is clear: if you heat with coal, act now. The price signal from the market is unambiguous – waiting will cost you.
