Born before 1969? This document decides your early retirement

People born between the end of 1948 and the beginning of 1969 can still apply for early retirement in Poland. The crucial piece of evidence is a work certificate confirming employment in special conditions or of a special nature. The application must be submitted to ZUS online or in person no later than the day before reaching the standard retirement age.

The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) reminds that the right to early retirement is primarily granted to those who worked in jobs involving increased risk, harmful environments, or exceptionally demanding physical or mental conditions. Without proper documentation, the years of service alone are not enough.

The key document is the work certificate issued by the employer. It must include an entry confirming that the employee performed work in special conditions or of a special character. If the workplace did not have official ministerial lists of such positions, it is enough to show that the scope of duties matches the positions listed in the Council of Ministers’ regulation of 7 February 1983.

Who qualifies and what conditions must be met

To obtain the right to early retirement, several requirements must be fulfilled simultaneously. The applicant must have the required period of insurance – usually 25 years for women and 30 years for men – and reach a specific age, which varies depending on the type of work. In many cases, women can retire at 55 and men at 60, provided they have worked in special conditions for at least 15 years.

The application itself is straightforward. It can be submitted electronically via the ZUS portal or in person at any ZUS branch. However, the deadline is strict: the documents must be filed no later than the day before the applicant reaches the standard retirement age – 60 for women and 65 for men. Missing this deadline means losing the chance for early retirement.

What to do if the employer no longer exists

If the employer has gone out of business, the former employee can still prove the nature of work using archived records, payroll cards, or witness statements. ZUS accepts such evidence in the absence of a formal work certificate. In practice, it is advisable to gather as many documents as possible before filing the application.
