Bermudair becomes new airbus a220 operator with first order matching lot’s choice

BermudAir, the national carrier of Bermuda, has placed its first-ever order with Airbus, selecting 10 A220-300 aircraft. The deal, announced during the Farnborough International Airshow, mirrors the choice made by Poland’s PLL LOT, which ordered 40 A220 family jets in 2025. The contract was quietly recorded in Airbus’s order book in March as an order from an undisclosed customer.

The new aircraft will be configured with three cabin classes and 135 seats, enabling BermudAir to expand its network across the Atlantic and the Caribbean. The carrier plans to use the A220-300 for direct flights connecting Bermuda with destinations in the Caribbean and North America, leveraging the plane’s range and efficiency to serve smaller airports with limited infrastructure.

A strategic move for regional connectivity

– The A220 is the perfect aircraft to support the next phase of BermudAir’s growth. Its exceptional range, operating economics, and excellent performance at airports with constrained capacity will allow us to connect even more people between Bermuda, the Caribbean, and North America – said Adam Scott, founder and CEO of BermudAir.

Airbus executives echoed the sentiment, highlighting the A220’s ability to open new markets. – This agreement introduces the A220 to a unique operating environment in the Atlantic and the Caribbean, demonstrating how its efficiency supports tailored business models of carriers – said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, executive vice president of sales at Airbus. He added that the selection confirms the A220’s role as a tool for targeted development in the region.

According to Airbus data, the A220 consumes 25% less fuel and emits 25% less CO2 per passenger compared to previous-generation aircraft. By the end of June 2026, Airbus had delivered 526 A220 aircraft to over 25 operators worldwide.

A shared vision with PLL LOT

BermudAir’s move comes just over a year after Poland’s flag carrier, PLL LOT, made its first Airbus order in history. In June 2025, during the Paris Air Show, LOT announced the purchase of 40 aircraft from the A220 family – 20 of the smaller A220-100 and 20 of the larger A220-300. The contract includes options for an additional 44 aircraft, potentially expanding LOT’s A220 fleet to 84 jets. Deliveries to LOT are set to begin in 2027, gradually replacing the Embraer regional jets currently used by the airline.

The parallel choices underscore a growing trend among smaller and mid-sized carriers to adopt the A220 as a fuel-efficient, flexible backbone for regional and transatlantic routes. Both BermudAir and LOT aim to use the aircraft to open new direct connections and improve operational efficiency.

BermudAir’s order marks the first time the A220 will serve the remote Atlantic island hub, giving the carrier a modern tool to compete in the competitive North American and Caribbean leisure and business travel markets.
