Belarus has imposed a ban on entering forests in three districts, including one along the border with Poland, as extreme heat poses a severe fire risk. The Ministry of Forestry announced that the highest fire danger level has triggered a state of increased readiness for emergency services. Authorities warn that further restrictions may be introduced nationwide.
The Belarusian Ministry of Forestry issued a statement confirming that fire prevention measures have been intensified across the country. The neighboring state operates a four-tier heat warning system, with the highest level currently in force in the Gomel and Brest regions. As of Saturday morning, a geographically limited ban on entering forests is in effect in the Brest region.
Restrictions along the Polish border
The ban applies to three specific districts: Kobryn, Zhabinka, and Brest – the latter lying directly on the border with Poland. In other parts of the country, less severe restrictions are in place, according to the state-run Belarusian news agency BelTA. The Ministry of Forestry stressed that similar bans and limitations are likely to persist nationwide.
“One should expect the continuation of bans and restrictions on entering forests across the entire country. This means a ban on driving private vehicles into forest areas, and in the event of a total ban – refraining from walks as well,” – stated the Belarusian Ministry of Forestry.
Authorities urge caution and monitoring
Residents are being asked to stay informed about current restrictions through a dedicated website featuring an interactive map. BelTA relayed an appeal from experts who urged citizens to regularly check the available information. Local forestry agencies also provide updates on restrictions in their respective areas.
The Ministry of Forestry highlighted that firefighting teams and forestry unit brigades have been placed on heightened alert to enable an immediate response in the event of a blaze. The measures come as Belarus grapples with a prolonged heatwave that has raised the risk of wildfires to critical levels.
Firefighting teams on high alert
The heightened readiness applies to all specialized fire suppression units and local forest service staff. Officials emphasized that quick reaction is essential to prevent small fires from escalating into large-scale disasters. The ban on private vehicles and pedestrian access to forests is intended to reduce human-caused ignition risks.
Authorities have not ruled out expanding the ban to other districts if the heatwave persists or intensifies. Residents are encouraged to follow official communications and avoid any activities that could spark a fire in dry woodland areas.
