Bechtel, the general contractor for Poland’s first nuclear power plant in the Choczewo municipality in Pomerania, has signed an agreement with Unihouse S.A. from the Unibep Group for the design and construction, using modular technology, of temporary accommodation buildings for 1,000 project workers. The facility will be built within the investment site being developed by Polish Nuclear Power Plants.
Bechtel is an American engineering and construction firm founded in 1898 in San Francisco. Together with Westinghouse, it is responsible for building the nuclear power plant in Poland. Unihouse S.A. is a Polish company based in Bielsk Podlaski, specialising in modular construction, and is part of the Unibep Group – one of the largest Polish construction groups with Polish capital, with 76 years of experience. The subcontractor was selected through a tender that included pre-qualification and technical and commercial evaluation of bids. The tender framework included technical capabilities, experience and price.
Scope of work and schedule
The subject of the signed „Design and Build” contract is the design and construction, using modular technology, of accommodation and auxiliary facilities for 1,000 people. The tasks include temporary residential units and social facilities such as a kitchen, canteen and laundry, as well as internal roads and parking spaces.
– Bechtel places quality and safety first when executing its projects. Best practices from our projects show that people performing priority work should always be accommodated directly at the construction site. In the case of a nuclear power plant, this is about 1,000 workers – nearly 10 percent of all those who will work on the construction site. We have selected an experienced Polish company to build this multi-functional facility, including high-quality living and social space. This is also another agreement signed in recent months with a Polish contractor and confirmation of Bechtel’s 'we buy where we build’ philosophy in practice – said Leszek Hołda, President of Bechtel Polska.
Work is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026. The facility will be fully operational in the first half of 2029. The first 500 rooms are to be ready for occupancy as early as the second quarter of 2028.
Engagement of local subcontractors
Unihouse has declared that, as part of the agreement with Bechtel, it plans to entrust part of the design work to a company from Pomerania. Unihouse also presented plans to engage specialised Polish subcontractors to carry out individual stages of the work.
– The inclusion of our company in the supply chain of a unique client such as Bechtel is a milestone in the company’s history, extending beyond the value of the signed agreement – said Marcin Gołębiewski, President of the Management Board of Unihouse S.A. – We are proof that our procedures, quality and safety meet the standards required by Bechtel and Westinghouse. We have thus entered the elite circle of technology suppliers for the most sophisticated, demanding, large-scale investments, which opens up a range of new opportunities for us. As a Polish company that is part of a Polish capital group with international experience, we have successfully carried out projects for many years on demanding markets in Scandinavia, Germany, Iceland and Poland. Our many years of experience and hundreds of completed projects show that Polish technological thinking and competence can compete effectively on the international stage.
– Unihouse’s strength lies not only in its broad portfolio of projects and modular products, but also in the stable base provided by its affiliation with the Unibep Group – one of the largest Polish construction groups with Polish capital, with 76 years of experience. This combination of international know-how with Polish roots is the foundation of our development and credibility with partners in many markets – both in Poland and abroad. Thank you for your trust. We will do our utmost to ensure that our cooperation runs smoothly and becomes the beginning of further joint ventures – added Marcin Gołębiewski.
Accommodation for 10 percent of workers
The accommodation facility will ultimately be intended for about 10 percent of the workers involved in building the nuclear power plant in the Choczewo municipality, whose constant presence at the construction site will be necessary during the project’s implementation. The allocation of places will depend on the schedule, and the entire facility will be built within the boundaries of the existing investment site.
– The agreement signed today concerns accommodation that will cover less than 10 percent of the need in this area. It is part of broader activities related to the construction of accommodation facilities for Poland’s first nuclear power plant. In parallel, we are finalising an analysis of the accommodation base in cooperation with the Pomeranian Development Agency. In the space of three months, more than 800 applications were received, confirming the scale of interest from the local market. For Polish Nuclear Power Plants, the development of local content and the maximum use of the region’s potential where the investment is being carried out are of key importance. We want to cooperate as much as possible with local entrepreneurs and base the project’s implementation on their resources. This approach not only supports the smooth progress of the investment but also translates into tangible economic benefits for local communities – said Marek Woszczyk, President of the Management Board of Polish Nuclear Power Plants.
The agreement with Unihouse is part of the activities involved in building the accommodation facilities for the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. Bechtel has signed several agreements with Polish contractors in recent months, implementing the „we buy where we build” philosophy. Unihouse S.A. from the Unibep Group joins the circle of technology suppliers for demanding, large-scale infrastructure investments.
