Arcelormittal poland to produce hardest rails. First shipments may go to canada

ArcelorMittal Poland is developing a new rail grade called R400HT, the most advanced standard under European norms. The first shipments could go to Canada, where rails must withstand temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius and enormous loads from ore trains.

The project, launched in 2025, aims to produce rails with exceptional hardness both on the surface and deep inside the head. This makes them suitable for extreme conditions where standard grades wear out too quickly. The company plans to complete qualification tests by the end of 2026.

„The rail grade we are implementing achieves extraordinary hardness across the entire cross-section of the head, which translates into outstanding durability under intense loads,” – explained Tomasz Wojciechowski, head of product development for long products at ArcelorMittal Poland.

Technology behind extreme hardness

The R400HT specification requires a precise chemical composition that ensures high wear resistance. However, this composition makes the steel more sensitive to stresses during production. The biggest challenge is balancing hardness with toughness.

„We have to run the heat treatment process so that we achieve very high hardness not only on the surface but also in layers up to about 2 cm deep inside the rail head. At the same time, the rail must retain enough plasticity for safe operation,” – Wojciechowski told WNP.

ArcelorMittal Poland already produces 120-metre-long rails and has introduced chemically hardened heads. The new grade pushes the limits further, targeting markets like Scandinavia and Canada where low temperatures and heavy duty cycles are the norm.

Strategic push for global markets

The initial impulse came from ArcelorMittal’s own iron ore mine in Canada, which needs ultra-durable tracks for hauling multi-tonne loads. The company is already in discussions with other Canadian partners about potential deliveries.

„Introducing this new rail grade is strategically important for us. It not only meets the needs of the most demanding customers but also allows us to participate in tenders where having this grade is a mandatory condition. The project is a significant step toward strengthening our position in the advanced rail segment,” – said Marek Kempa, managing director of the long products division at ArcelorMittal Poland.

Such rails are considered a challenge even for the best rail producers globally, currently unattainable for the vast majority of them. The company expects the qualification process to open doors to long-term contracts in harsh-environment rail networks.
