Promot, a Polish family-owned metalworking company, has joined the supply chain for the M1 Abrams main battle tank, becoming the eighth Polish supplier of components for the platform. The company will produce specialized metal parts, including forgings and CNC-machined components, for both new production and servicing of Abrams tanks used by over a dozen countries.
The contract with General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) places Promot among a network of Polish firms that already manufacture 52 different components supporting the global Abrams fleet, which numbers over 5,000 tanks across ten nations. This move strengthens the so-called local content in Poland’s largest defense program without relying on formal offset agreements.
Local content without formal offset
Polish companies are now delivering parts that go directly into Abrams tanks being produced for the Polish Army and other users. The cooperation demonstrates that building industrial participation in major weapon programs can happen organically through competitiveness and quality, rather than through rigid offset requirements.
– Including Polish firms in our supply chain builds capabilities that matter not only for the Polish Abrams fleet but also for the global user community of this platform – said Christopher Brown, vice president of global strategy and international business at General Dynamics Land Systems.
From automotive to defense
Promot, based in southern Poland, has long served the automotive sector with high-precision metal parts. The company’s expertise in specialized steel and aluminum machining, combined with strict quality assurance processes, allowed it to meet the demanding military standards required by GDLS.
– Cooperation with GDLS is a recognition of the quality of the parts we produce. We are proud that this year Polish soldiers will receive Abrams tanks containing components made in our factory. It is a great responsibility, because every element matters for the safety and reliability of the entire platform – said Przemysław Chybiorz, CEO of Promot.
A foundation for future cooperation
The current order is only a starting point. Poland has 366 Abrams tanks on order, and a Regional Competence Center in Poznań is being developed for maintenance and repair. The growing industrial ecosystem opens the door for more Polish firms to enter the supply chain, potentially leading to co-production of Abrams components and even full tanks in Poland.
For GDLS, working with Promot means access to rare, high-end metalworking skills. For Poland, it means building a self-sufficient defense industrial base that can support not only its own military but also contribute to NATO’s eastern flank readiness. The model shows that strategic procurement can be a catalyst for long-term industrial growth and technological capability.
