Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch a new C-Class, and the first version to arrive will be an electric one with a large battery. The C 400 4Matic, already tested by Autokult, shows that the manufacturer can still build a luxury car with the comfort traditional fans expect.
After years of experimentation and searching for a fresh direction, this model looks like a return to form. Traditional Mercedes loyalists should be satisfied and intrigued, even though the car is powered by electricity. The car will be available to buy in Poland this autumn.
According to Autokult, the new C-Class follows a similar stylistic path to the GLC, although the body is clearly different. The front is dominated by a large grille that, in the electric version, is heavily chromed. Despite this bold face, the designers have kept aerodynamics in check. The drag coefficient amounts to only 0.22, helped by a rear section that falls away smoothly.
The C 400 4Matic tested by Autokult has two electric motors. Their combined output is 489 hp and 800 Nm of torque, which allows a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds. The top speed is 210 km/h. Thanks to air suspension and sport tires, the car stays very comfortable while remaining dynamic, so it feels like a genuine Mercedes behind the wheel.
Electric technology with fast charging
The electrical architecture of the new C-Class uses an 800-volt system. Maximum charging power is 330 kW, while recuperation can feed energy back at up to 300 kW. The battery has a usable capacity of 94 kWh, which translates into a range of 592-762 km.
Inside, the dominant element is a huge display that spans the entire width of the cabin. Its diagonal exceeds 39 inches and the resolution reaches around 10 million pixels. The system is based on the MB.OS platform and comes with artificial intelligence support, as well as a generous set of gadgets and lighting effects. This digital-heavy interior is meant as the German answer to the way Chinese carmakers use technology to attract customers.
A glass roof and the return to premium roots
The cabin is covered by a glass roof running along its full length. It can be dimmed and brightened electrically, giving passengers control over light and atmosphere inside the car.
The premiere of the C 400 4Matic is planned for autumn this year, and the first cars should reach Polish dealers at the same time.
