A Cold War bunker for sale in Kent comes with a French view

A Cold War bunker has gone up for sale in Folkestone, Kent, with a price tag of £45,000. The shelter, built during the period that ended in 1991, is being marketed as a rare piece of military history with a view across the Channel.

The plot is located opposite the North Downs Way walking trail and within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, according to the listing from Miles & Barr. The plot measures roughly 15 by 15 metres and is set away from the road, with the highest point offering extensive views.

The estate agency Miles & Barr sets the tone by declaring that the offer is not a standard one.

– It is not an ordinary offer – said Miles & Barr.

Folkestone lies on the south-eastern coast of England, on the English Channel. The agency says the French coast is only a few dozen kilometres away in a straight line, which is why the plot is advertised as having a beautiful view of France.

History hidden underground

According to the BBC, the bunker found on the plot dates back to the Cold War. The estate agency claims it is probably the last of more than 1,500 shelters built in Great Britain during that period.

– It is probably the last of over 1,500 bunkers built in Great Britain. It is very rare for one of these bunkers to have access to a main road and driveway and to be preserved in such good condition – said the agency.

No original interior fittings have survived, and the listing says the interior is free from damp. The walls can keep an optimal temperature all year round, regardless of the weather outside.

A plot with practical possibilities

The listing points out that the property has a gate and enough space for around six cars. Miles & Barr suggests it could work as a place to park a camper van and admire the scenery, and it says there is a possibility of connecting water to the plot.

– The property has an entrance gate and will hold about six cars. This plot could be an ideal place to pull up with a camper and enjoy the views – added the agency.

The asking price for the property is £45,000. Interested buyers must also pay a non-refundable reservation fee of 4.5 per cent of the purchase price, with VAT added.
