President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that a historic agreement with Iran will be signed on Sunday, marking a potential end to hostilities in the Middle East. The deal, according to Trump, includes Tehran’s renunciation of nuclear weapons and the immediate reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz to all shipping.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump detailed the terms of what he called a breakthrough accord. He stated that the document explicitly commits Iran to abandoning its pursuit of nuclear weapons and relinquishing any enriched uranium stockpiles.
– The agreement is to be signed tomorrow, and immediately after its signing, the Strait of Hormuz will be open for everyone – Trump wrote, framing the development as a diplomatic victory.
Trump also offered a glimpse of the long-term plan for dealing with existing nuclear materials, which he described as dust buried under submerged granite mountains.
– In due course, when everything calms down, we will deal with the nuclear dust, buried deep under powerful, submerged granite mountains, thanks to our wonderful B-2 bombers and their brilliant pilots, and then we will neutralize and destroy it, whether in Iran or in the United States – he added.
Pakistan’s mediating role
The announcement was echoed by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has been acting as a mediator between Washington and Tehran. Sharif confirmed on X that finalization of the agreement is expected within 24 hours.
– Finalization will likely occur within the next 24 hours. Pakistan is preparing for an electronic signing of the agreement immediately thereafter, followed by technical talks next week – Sharif stated, thanking both the United States and Iran for their engagement in the negotiations.
– We are convinced that this historic peace agreement will serve as a strong foundation for lasting peace – he added, expressing gratitude to regional allies for their support.
Iran’s cautious stance
Iran’s foreign ministry, however, struck a more measured tone. Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the signing will not take place on Sunday, contradicting Trump’s timeline.
– It cannot be ruled out that the memorandum will be signed in the coming days – Baghaei noted, advising caution in commenting on dates due to fluctuations on the part of the United States.
According to Reuters, the Iranian spokesman also emphasized that the presence of American military bases abroad and the U.S. military footprint in the region must come to an end. This condition was not mentioned in Trump’s post and may become a sticking point in final negotiations.
Trump also issued a veiled warning, stating that if Iran refuses to accept the final version of the agreement, the United States has an ultimate alternative which, he hopes, will never be used again. The remark underscores the high stakes and fragility of the talks.
