Polish railway infrastructure manager PKP PLK has signed a contract with Torpol for the modernisation of Warszawa Wschodnia station and Warszawa Stadion stop. The deal, worth nearly PLN 3 billion net, is co-financed by EU funds and will see construction work begin in December 2026 and last until the end of 2029.
The contract signed on Friday covers the design and execution of works for the Warsaw cross-city line. The total gross remuneration amounts to PLN 3.635 billion (PLN 2.955 billion net), comprising the base order of PLN 3.423 billion gross, an option scope of PLN 200.986 million gross, and an interface option of PLN 10.07 million gross. The project completion deadline is 51 months from the signing date, with a 72-month warranty period.
Modern transport hub for the capital
The centrepiece of the investment is the comprehensive reconstruction of Warszawa Wschodnia, one of Poland’s busiest railway stations, handling 279 long-distance and 673 commuter trains daily. All seven platforms will be rebuilt, covered with canopies, and raised to a uniform height to ease boarding. Escalators and lifts will be installed to all platforms, and the existing underpasses will be modernised and connected by a new pedestrian tunnel under platform 6, improving access to ul. Tysiąclecia.
A new bike path will be created in the western underpass. Additionally, a new footbridge will link the Warszawa Stadion stop with the Metro Stadion Narodowy station, restoring a connection planned 15 years ago. A new pedestrian and cycle underpass at ul. Chodakowska will provide a safe crossing between Praga-Północ and Praga-Południe.
Part of a larger railway overhaul
Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak stressed that the modernisation of Warszawa Wschodnia is a key step towards a seamless, modern transport system through the capital. He noted that after the completion of Warszawa Zachodnia station, work is already underway on the line towards Otwock. – This year PKP PLK has signed contracts worth over PLN 5 billion, including key sections of the Podłęże-Piekiełko project and line 201 connecting Bydgoszcz with the Tricity. These are concrete actions that translate into a better offer for carriers and access to 21st-century railways – Klimczak said.
PKP PLK CEO Piotr Wyborski added that once Warszawa Wschodnia is upgraded, the company will be ready to modernise the cross-city line in the city centre. A 1.6 km-long flyover connecting the station with line 9 will be built, carrying two tracks and improving traffic towards Gdańsk, Olsztyn and Legionowo. The railway viaducts over ul. Targowa, Siwca and Zamoyskiego will also be upgraded.
Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski highlighted that the investment goes beyond the station itself – it includes the long-awaited tunnel under the tracks connecting Kijowska and Żupnicza streets, linking Praga-Północ and Praga-Południe. – The whole city and both Pragas will benefit. A new pedestrian tunnel will also connect the metro mezzanine with the Warszawa Stadion platforms – Trzaskowski stated.
