Special codes on your driving license specify restrictions or additional requirements for the driver. Ignoring them can lead to legal consequences, and in extreme cases, a fine of up to 500 PLN. Many drivers are unaware that failing to wear prescribed glasses or contact lenses while driving is a punishable offense.
Every candidate for a driver’s license and those renewing their documents must undergo medical examinations, including vision tests. Drivers with visual impairments can obtain driving privileges provided they use the recommended correction, such as glasses or contact lenses, as reported by money.pl.
The most common code is 01, which indicates the need for vision correction while driving. It includes more specific designations: 01.01 for glasses, 01.02 for contact lenses, and 01.06 for both. Other codes cover health and technical limitations, such as 02 for hearing aids, 05 for driving only in daylight, 10 for modified gearbox, 15 for adapted clutch and brake, 20 for steering wheel adjustment, and 25 for specially adapted seat belts.
What happens if you ignore the codes
Ignoring the restrictions written on your driving license can result in financial penalties. A driver who is required to wear glasses but uses only contact lenses (or vice versa) may receive a fine of 500 PLN. The same sanction applies to non-compliance with other specified limitations.
Many drivers mistakenly believe that as long as they see well, they can switch between glasses and contacts freely. However, the law is strict: the code on your license dictates exactly what correction you must use. If it says 01.01, you must wear glasses; if 01.02, only contact lenses are allowed. Driving without the required correction is treated as a violation of license conditions.
Practical advice for drivers
To avoid an unexpected ticket, always check the codes on your driving license. If you have vision correction requirements, make sure you have the right glasses or contacts in the car before driving. Keep a spare pair of glasses in your vehicle in case your contacts become uncomfortable.
If your vision changes, visit a doctor and update your license. The process is straightforward: undergo new medical tests, and if your vision has improved, the restriction can be removed. Conversely, if you need stronger correction, the code will be adjusted accordingly.
Remember that the fine is not the only risk. In the event of an accident, driving without the prescribed correction could be considered a contributing factor, potentially affecting insurance claims or legal liability. Stay safe and stay legal.
