Unimot invests in gas cogeneration

RCEkoenergia, a company from the Unimot group, has signed a contract for the delivery, assembly and commissioning of a cogenerator combined with a steam generator. The investment is part of a broader modernisation of the heat and power plant in Czechowice-Dziedzice.

The gas cogeneration unit will have an electrical capacity of 1 MW and a thermal capacity of 1.06 MW. It is the first cogeneration installation in the target generation park of RCEkoenergia. The company intends to install a total of 10 MW in high-efficiency cogeneration systems. The project will allow for a gradual phase-out of coal-based production while maintaining the status of an efficient district heating system.

– Gas cogeneration is another element of the investment that brings us closer to a complete abandonment of coal – said Włodzimierz Popielewski, president of RCEkoenergia.

A step away from coal

The unit will be integrated with a steam generator, enabling simultaneous production of electricity and heat. This solution significantly increases overall efficiency compared to separate generation. The cogeneration unit will replace part of the capacity currently provided by coal-fired boilers.

– In the next stage, we plan further expansion of biomass and cogeneration capacity, as well as heat pumps and heat accumulators, which will allow us to shut down the second coal boiler – added the manager. We are building a low-emission, flexible system resistant to energy market volatility.

Long-term modernisation plan

The RCEkoenergia plant in Czechowice-Dziedzice is undergoing a thorough modernisation carried out in two stages. The facility is expected to ultimately achieve a capacity of around 40 MW, based on a diversified fuel mix that enables efficient operation depending on current market conditions. The value of the investment has not been disclosed.

RCEkoenergia, part of the Unimot group, is a multi-energy company operating since 2002 on the site of a former refinery in Czechowice-Dziedzice. The project aligns with Poland’s energy transition goals, reducing dependence on coal and increasing the share of natural gas and renewables in local heat and power generation.
