Polish recycling giant considers expanding into EV batteries and solar panel recycling

Orzeł Biały, Poland’s largest recycler of used lead-acid batteries, has launched a process to update its corporate strategy. The company is exploring entry into the recycling of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and photovoltaic panels, responding to shifts in battery technology and EU circular economy requirements.

The management board of the Piekary Śląskie-based company decided on June 11, 2026, to begin work on defining new strategic directions. The decision was prompted by global changes in battery production technology and the emergence of alternative battery types that are increasingly replacing traditional lead-acid units.

– Considering the need to ensure production continuity, observed market trends and the current legal environment, including the need to achieve the best results within the circular economy as required by EU regulations, the management board has decided to start work on updating the development strategy and defining new strategic directions – informed Orzeł Biały.

New strategic directions

The first area identified by the company is the recycling of batteries and accumulators other than lead-acid ones. The group intends to develop, acquire or implement technologies for processing alternative batteries, including lithium-ion cells used in electric vehicles.

Another potential growth path involves mergers and acquisitions that could generate synergies and enable expansion into new markets, including international ones. Orzeł Biały also sees opportunities in new environmental technologies that could improve production efficiency and waste management.

Recycling of photovoltaic panels is also considered a key element of the company’s future strategy, as it supports the sustainable development of the renewable energy sector and allows efficient recovery of raw materials. The group is also looking into investments in renewable energy sources or related technologies, as well as building a new waste landfill to ensure long-term waste management security.

Financial performance and funding

Orzeł Biały plans to finance the new development projects primarily from retained earnings, EU funds and other available sources. In the first quarter of 2026, the group reported revenues of PLN 153.5 million, slightly down from PLN 154.3 million a year earlier. Net profit fell sharply to PLN 10.8 million from PLN 27.1 million in Q1 2025.

The company remains the largest Polish producer of refined lead and the leading domestic recycler of used lead-acid batteries. Its shares are listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
