100-kilometer stretch, 70 km/h, three years. Big changes on the A2 motorway

The expansion of the A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw is set to begin in the second half of the year. Drivers will face restrictions, including lane narrowing and speed limits of 70-90 km/h, which could significantly extend travel times. The entire project, worth PLN 1.4 billion, will widen the route to three lanes in both directions.

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways has signed a contract worth nearly PLN 257 million with Strabag to widen the A2 between the Grodzisk Mazowiecki and Konotopa interchanges. This section covers 17.2 km. Contracts for three more sections are expected to be signed by the end of summer, with work starting in the third quarter. Budimex was selected to build the 24 km stretch between the Łódź Północ and Łyszkowice interchanges.

Traffic disruptions and speed limits

Drivers must prepare for significant disruptions. Artur Popko, CEO of Budimex, told Rzeczpospolita that two lanes will remain open during construction, but they will be narrower than usual and speed limits will be introduced. – Certainly, traffic capacity and driving smoothness will decrease – he said. Depending on the section, speed will be restricted to 70-90 km/h.

Currently, the route between Łódź and Warsaw has only two lanes, which often leads to congestion during peak traffic. After the renovation, three lanes in each direction will be available. Construction work is expected to last until mid-2029, though an earlier completion is possible.

Construction timeline and costs

– We will try to stay ahead of schedule. Everything will depend on weather conditions and whether we can carry out work during the winter period – Popko added. The total cost of the A2 modernization between Łódź and Warsaw amounts to PLN 1.4 billion. The investment is intended to improve traffic flow on one of Poland’s most important transport corridors.

Once completed, the expanded motorway should ease congestion and enhance travel safety and comfort for thousands of daily commuters and freight carriers.
