100-kilometer stretch, 70 km/h, three years: big changes on the A2 motorway

The long-awaited expansion of the A2 motorway between Warsaw and Łódź is finally set to begin in the second half of 2026. Drivers will have to deal with speed limits of 70–90 km/h and narrowed lanes for the next three years, as the route is widened from two to three lanes in each direction. The entire investment, worth PLN 1.4 billion, is scheduled for completion by mid-2029.

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has already signed a contract worth nearly PLN 257 million with Strabag for widening a 17.2 km section between the Grodzisk Mazowiecki and Konotopa interchanges. Three more contracts for the remaining segments are expected to be signed by the end of summer. According to the daily “Rzeczpospolita”, Budimex has been selected to handle the 24-kilometer stretch from the Łódź Północ junction to Łyszkowice.

What drivers should expect

During construction, two lanes will remain open to traffic in each direction, but they will be significantly narrower than today. This, combined with temporary speed restrictions ranging from 70 to 90 km/h depending on the section, will inevitably reduce capacity and traffic flow. – Z pewnością przepustowość ruchu i płynność jazdy spadnie – admitted Artur Popko, CEO of Budimex.

The existing two-lane A2 between Łódź and Warsaw is notorious for congestion, especially during peak hours and holiday periods. Once the upgrade is complete, the motorway will have three lanes in both directions, which should significantly improve travel times and safety.

Timeline and cost

Construction work is due to start in the third quarter of 2026 and is expected to last until mid-2029. However, the contractor hopes to finish earlier. – Będziemy starali się wyprzedzać harmonogram. Wszystko będzie zależeć od warunków atmosferycznych i tego, czy będziemy w stanie prowadzić prace w okresie zimowym – explained Artur Popko. The total cost of rebuilding the entire A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw is estimated at PLN 1.4 billion.

Once finished, the expanded motorway will not only offer more capacity but also a smoother and safer driving experience for thousands of daily commuters and freight traffic. The project is part of Poland’s broader effort to modernize its key transport corridors and align with European infrastructure standards.
